The honest answer fits in a paragraph, so here it is up front. WAV stores every sample of the audio, uncompressed, exactly as it was captured, which sounds pristine and costs you roughly 10 MB per minute for stereo. MP3 throws away the parts of the sound that human ears are least likely to notice, which cuts the file to around 1 MB per minute at 192 kbps while still sounding, to most people, essentially the same. That’s the entire trade-off: WAV keeps everything and is big, MP3 keeps what matters and is small. Everything below is just knowing which side of that trade you want in a given moment.

Who should use WAV

WAV earns its size whenever the audio is still being worked on or needs to be preserved in full.

Reach for WAV when you’re recording, because you want to capture everything and decide what to keep later. Use it while editing and mixing, because every time you process lossy audio you compound its losses, and you want a clean source to work from. Keep your final masters as WAV, since a master is the copy everything else is made from and it should hold the full quality. And WAV is the format samplers and DAWs generally expect, so if you’re loading sounds into music software or a hardware sampler, uncompressed is what plays nicely. In all of these, the file size is a cost worth paying because the quality is the point.

Who should use MP3

MP3 wins the moment the audio is finished and you just want to hear it or move it around.

Use MP3 for listening, on your phone, in the car, on a run, where a 320 kbps file is indistinguishable from the source to almost everyone. Use it for sharing, because a small file emails, uploads, and sends without trouble. And use it for storage when you have a lot of audio and limited space, since ten times smaller adds up fast across a library. The quality it gives up is quality you were never going to hear in these situations, so paying for WAV’s size here buys you nothing.

There’s also the plain matter of where the file has to go. Car stereos, older phones, cheap Bluetooth speakers, and web players all read MP3 without a second thought, the same way H.264 plays everywhere in video. WAV usually works too, but its size makes it awkward to move around, and some players and services simply expect the smaller format. When the audio is done and just needs to reach ears, MP3 is the format that gets there with the least friction.

The best bitrate for MP3

If you’re making MP3s, the bitrate is the one knob that matters, and there are really three settings worth knowing.

128 kbps is enough for spoken word, podcasts, audiobooks, lectures, where there’s no rich musical detail to preserve and small files are welcome. 192 kbps is the sensible default for general music, a good balance where most people stop being able to tell it apart from the original. 320 kbps is the top of the standard MP3 range, for music you care about and want as close to transparent as the format gets. Higher bitrate means better quality and bigger files, but only up to the quality of your source. If you make a 320 kbps MP3 from a scratchy old recording, you get a large file that sounds exactly as scratchy as before. The bitrate can’t add detail that was never captured.

The one-way door

The single most important habit with these formats is understanding that lossy compression only goes one way. When you make an MP3 from a WAV, the discarded audio is gone for good. You cannot get it back by converting the MP3 to something else.

So the rule is simple: keep the WAV master, make MP3 copies from it. Never the reverse as your source of truth. A WAV made from an MP3 does not sound better than the MP3 it came from. It’s just bigger, a large uncompressed container holding audio that already had its detail removed. The file grows; the quality doesn’t. People sometimes convert MP3 back to WAV anyway, and that’s fine when a piece of software specifically demands a WAV file, but do it knowing you’re solving a compatibility problem, not recovering quality.

You should also be honest with yourself about how audible the difference actually is. In a careful blind test, most listeners cannot reliably tell a 320 kbps MP3 from the original WAV on ordinary equipment. The gap is real on paper and matters enormously for editing and archiving, where losses stack up, but for the final act of listening it’s often inaudible. That’s not a reason to master in MP3; it’s a reason not to agonize over shipping one.
