From studio-size to pocket-size
WAV is audio with nothing removed: every sample, uncompressed, which is why a three-minute song weighs 30 MB and an hour of interview tape weighs 600. That’s the right format while you’re recording and editing. It’s the wrong format for email, chat apps, upload forms, and phone storage.
Converting WAV to MP3 is the standard way out, and this page does it without the usual detour through someone’s server. The file is compressed in your browser, on your machine, and lands back in your downloads folder. A tenth the size is the rule of thumb; at 128 kbps, closer to a fifteenth.

For music you’re sharing, use 320 kbps; from an uncompressed source it’s about as close to transparent as MP3 gets. For podcasts, interviews, and anything spoken, 128 or 192 kbps keeps things small with no audible cost. There’s no wrong answer that loses your original, because the original never changes.

A stereo WAV runs about 10 MB per minute; a 192 kbps MP3 runs about 1.4 MB per minute. An hour-long recording drops from roughly 600 MB to under 90 MB. At 128 kbps it shrinks further still.
MP3 throws away detail the ear is least likely to notice, and at 192 kbps and up most people can't pick it from the original. Keep the WAV if you plan to edit or master the audio later; the MP3 is for sharing and listening.
