Why M4A files keep needing conversion
M4A is Apple’s favorite audio container. Voice memos from an iPhone, GarageBand exports, iTunes purchases, Logic bounces: they all come out as .m4a. On Apple hardware that’s invisible. The trouble starts when the file leaves the ecosystem, and a car stereo, an older MP3 player, a website upload form, or a Windows app that predates the format shrugs at it.
MP3 is the format nothing shrugs at. Two decades of hardware and software support means an MP3 plays on roughly everything with a speaker. So the fix is one conversion, and this page does it without sending your recording anywhere: drop the M4A in, and the MP3 is written on your own machine.

Picking a bitrate for M4A sources
Match the output to what’s in the file. Voice memos record at modest bitrates, so 128 kbps MP3 loses nothing you can hear. iTunes music is typically 256 kbps AAC, and 320 kbps MP3 carries it over about as faithfully as the format allows. When in doubt, 192 is the sensible middle.
